What is cat age in human years?
Cat age in human years is an estimate of where your cat sits in their life compared to a person. Cats do most of their growing up in two years: a 1-year-old cat is roughly a 15-year-old human, and by age 2 they are about 24. From there the pace settles to about 4 human years per cat year.
The "multiply by seven" rule was borrowed from dogs, and it fails for cats at both ends: it makes kittens too old and seniors too young. The chart runs to 25 because cats genuinely get there; the record holder, Creme Puff, reached 384, which works out to about 168 in human terms.

The standard feline chart works like this:
- Year one counts as 15 human years.
- Year two adds 9 more (24 total).
- Every year after that adds 4 years.
Under one year, development is even faster and the calculator uses a steeper curve: about 10 human years by six months, then 15 by the first birthday.
Cat life stages: when is a cat a senior?
Vets group cat ages into four stages1. A cat becomes a senior at about age 10, which is roughly 60 in human years.

Lifestyle shifts the odds more than genetics: indoor cats commonly reach 10 to 15+ years while outdoor cats average far shorter lives3. The conversion stays the same either way; the years available change.

Year one gives 15, year two adds 9 for a total of 24, and the remaining two years add 4 each:24 + 2 × 4 = 32 human years. A 4-year-old cat is a 32-year-old human: past the chaotic youth, deep into prime hunting years.
How it works
Cats sprint to adulthood in two years and then age at an almost metronomic pace: about four human years per birthday, whether they're a dainty Siamese or a small-sofa Maine Coon. The chart simply writes that rhythm down.
The chart method follows the standard feline aging chart used in veterinary life-stage guidance1 and by International Cat Care2: 15 human years for year one, 9 more for year two (24 total), then 4 per year. Breed and size barely shift feline aging, so one curve fits all cats.
Under one year, the calculator uses a steeper piecewise curve: kittens reach about 10 human years by six months and 15 by their first birthday.

About 15. A 1-year-old cat is fully grown, can reproduce, and behaves like a human teenager. That is why the chart gives the whole first year 15 human years.
How many cat years is one human year?
There's no fixed number. A cat's first year equals about 15 human years, the second about 9, and every year after that about 4. Averaged across a long life it comes out near 5.
Is one cat year really seven human years?
No. The 7:1 rule was borrowed from dogs, and it fails there too. Cats race to adulthood in two years (about 24 human years) and then settle into a steady 4 human years per cat year.
What are cat years?

Creme Puff, from Austin, Texas, lived 38 years and 3 days (1967 to 2005), per Guinness World Records. On our chart that works out to about 168 in human years. Her owner, Jake Perry, also raised the previous record holder, Granpa Rex Allen, who reached 34. Whatever Mr. Perry was feeding his cats, science would like a word.
