How do dog years work?

Where did the 7-year rule come from?

Nobody knows exactly, but the math gives it away: humans live to about 70, dogs to about 10, so someone divided. The rule has been around since at least the 1950s and it refuses to die because it’s easy. The problem is that dogs age on a curve. They sprint through youth and then slow down, so a single multiplier is wrong at both ends.

By the 7-year rule, a 1-year-old dog is a 7-year-old child. In reality, a 1-year-old dog can reproduce, has adult teeth, and has finished most of its growth. That’s a teenager.

The real curve: fast, then slow

The pattern vets actually use looks like this:

Put differently: dogs do about 40% of their lifetime aging in their first two years. Everything after is the long, slow middle.

What does DNA say? The epigenetic clock

In 2020, researchers at UC San Diego compared DNA methylation (chemical marks that accumulate on DNA with age) in 104 Labrador Retrievers against the same marks in humans. The result was a formula:

human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31

The natural logarithm is the interesting part. It mathematically encodes “fast early, slow later”: by this clock a 1-year-old dog is 31 in human years, a 4-year-old is 53, but a 10-year-old is only 68. Two caveats worth knowing before you quote it at the dog park: the study used a single breed, and the formula only works from age 1 up. It also measures cellular aging, which shows up long before joints, teeth, and gray muzzles do. Why do small dogs age slower than big ones?

Across mammals, bigger species live longer: elephants outlast mice. Dogs break that rule within one species. A Chihuahua often reaches 15 to 17 years while a Great Dane averages 8 to 10. Large breeds grow faster, and that faster growth appears to come with a cost; researchers point at growth hormone pathways (IGF-1) as a likely driver.

This is why any honest dog-age conversion asks for your dog’s size, and why the senior label arrives around age 11 for a terrier but as early as 6 for a mastiff.
