Quick answer
How long are dogs pregnant?
Dogs are pregnant for about 63 days from mating, roughly nine weeks, and most litters arrive between day 58 and day 68. Enter the mating date above to get a due date plus a dated whelping calendar with every milestone.
| Milestone | Day |
|---|---|
| Ultrasound can confirm | from 25 |
| X-ray puppy count | 45–50 |
| Start temperature checks | 58 |
| Due date | 63 |
What is a dog's gestation period?
A dog's gestation period is about 63 days, counted from mating, with most litters arriving between day 58 and day 681. The window exists because mating date and conception date rarely match: sperm can survive several days waiting for ovulation. Counted from ovulation itself, gestation is a tight 62 to 64 days, which is why breeders who need day-level precision have their vet run progesterone timing.
Nine weeks goes fast. The calculator above turns one date into the full schedule: confirmation windows, the X-ray puppy count, whelping-box prep, and the day to start temperature checks.
How to use this calculator
- Enter the mating date. If there were several, use the first.
- Read the due date and its normal range, then work down the whelping calendar: every milestone comes with its own dates.
Dog pregnancy timeline: week by week
The same schedule the calculator personalizes, as day offsets from mating:
| Days | Week | Milestone |
|---|---|---|
| 7–14 | 1–2 | Fertilization & early division |
| 16–18 | 3 | Embryos implant |
| 21–28 | 3–4 | Morning sickness window |
| 25–35 | 4–5 | Vet confirmation window |
| 35–42 | 5–6 | Visible changes |
| 45–50 | 7–8 | Skeleton X-ray window |
| 50–56 | 8 | Prepare the whelping box |
| 58 | 9 | Start temperature checks |
| 63 | 9 | Due date |

How vets confirm pregnancy
There is no reliable at-home dog pregnancy test; human tests don't work because dogs don't produce hCG. Vets use three tools3: ultrasound from about day 25, which confirms heartbeats; the relaxin blood test from about day 28, which detects the pregnancy hormone dogs actually produce; and an X-ray between days 45 and 50, once puppy skeletons mineralize, which is the only way to get an accurate count.
Signs labor is close
From day 58, take her rectal temperature twice a day. A drop below 99°F (37.2°C) usually means puppies within 24 hours1. Alongside the drop you'll typically see nesting, restlessness, refusing food, and panting. Have the whelping box ready from week 8 so she has settled into it long before the big day.
Call your vet immediately if day 68 passes with no labor, if dark green discharge appears before the first puppy, or if she strains hard for 30 to 60 minutes without producing one2.
How it works
Dog pregnancies run on a remarkably fixed clock: about nine weeks from mating to whelping. Once the start date is known, everything else, from the first ultrasound to the whelping box, lands on the calendar by itself. The calculator just does that date math carefully.
The due date is mating date + 63 days, the canine gestation average1. The range shown spans days 58 to 68, which covers the normal spread when counting from mating rather than ovulation.
The whelping calendar maps each milestone to its documented day window: implantation around days 16 to 18, ultrasound confirmation from day 25, relaxin testing from day 28, skeletal X-rays from day 45, and temperature checks from day 5813.
All date math runs in UTC days, so daylight-saving changes never shift a milestone.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a dog pregnant?
About 63 days from mating, with most litters arriving between day 58 and day 68. That is roughly nine weeks, which is why breeders count dog pregnancy in weeks the way doctors do for humans.
How long are dogs pregnant in months?
A little over two months. The 63-day average works out to about 9 weeks, so a dog mated in early January typically whelps in the first half of March.
How do I know if my dog is pregnant?
Early signs are subtle: a brief appetite dip around week 3, slightly enlarged nipples, and a calmer mood. The only reliable confirmation comes from a vet: ultrasound from about day 25, or a relaxin blood test from about day 28. Our week-by-week signs guide covers what to look for at every stage.
Can a dog get pregnant when not in heat?
No. Conception only happens during estrus. Some dogs have silent heats with few visible signs, which can make a pregnancy look like it happened outside of heat.
How accurate is the due date?
From mating date alone, expect a window rather than a day: sperm can survive several days in the reproductive tract, so mating date and conception date rarely match. Counted from ovulation, gestation is a tight 62 to 64 days, which is why breeders who need precision use progesterone timing with their vet.
How many puppies will she have?
Litters commonly run five to six puppies, but anywhere from one (common in tiny breeds) to twelve or more (giant breeds) is normal. An X-ray between days 45 and 50 gives you the count, so you know when whelping is finished.
When should I call the vet during whelping?
Call right away if the due window passes day 68 with no labor, if there is dark green discharge before the first puppy arrives, or if she strains actively for more than 30 to 60 minutes without producing a puppy. Trust your gut: an unnecessary call is free, a delayed one is not.
